Family Related Responsibilities Paid Leave

Family-Related Responsibilities Leave is short-term leave with pay. Please refer to your collective agreement to consult the relevant clause that defines the “family” and identifies the circumstances for which such leave can be requested.

The Employer is generally authorized to grant you Family-Related Responsibilities Leave for the following reasons:

  1. To accompany a family member to a medical or dental appointment;
  2. To provide for the immediate and temporary care of a family member; or
  3. For needs directly related to the birth or adoption of your child.

For more information on the circumstances under which such leave can be granted, please consult your collective agreement or contact your compensation advisor.

This family-related leave should not be confused with Leave Without Pay, which is used to care for family and which is typically long-term (from 3 weeks to 5 years).

Limitations:

Employers may grant Family-Related Responsibilities Leave with pay up to a maximum of 37.5 hours (40 hours under some collective agreements) in a fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).
