Introduction
Fire protection in the Public Service of Canada is subject to requirements specified in Part II of the Canada Labour Code and to regulations issued under the legislation. In addition, a number of fire protection standards have been developed by the Fire Commissioner of Canada for application to Public Service establishments.
In 1986 the Office of the Fire Commissioner of Canada moved from Public Works Canada to Labour Canada. Since then, Labour Canada, on behalf of Treasury Board as employer, has provided fire protection services to Public Service departments. These services include fire safety inspections, fire investigations and monitoring of the design and construction of buildings for conformance with fire protection standards. Public Service departments are responsible for complying with policies and standards on fire safety and for co-operating with Labour Canada in all matters relating to fire protection.
Standards in force
Fire protective standards in force under the authority of the Treasury Board's personnel policies on occupational safety and health are published in the following chapters. In addition, the following standards now in force will be published in this volume as they are revised in cooperation with Labour Canada:
- Construction operations
- Welding and cutting
- Records storage
- Piers and wharves
- General storage
- Fire extinguishers
- Sprinkler systems
These standards may be obtained from the Fire Commissioner.
