How is your department planning to meet the objectives of the Policy on Green Procurement? | ||
NRC has in place several initiatives and practices in compliance with the policy on green procurement. A number of these have already been in place for several years in advance of the policy. Such initiatives and practices include amongst others: 1) extensive use of PWGSC’s mandatory standing offers for purchase of 10 major commodities – these
standing offers incorporate green procurement considerations in the commodity management strategy; 2) standing offer contracts for the procurement of solvents and chemical supplies, guaranteeing “just in time” delivery while reducing the need for storage space and reducing safety risks; 3) use of lower cost ‘interruptible supply’ of long term
natural gas contracts for its Ottawa Montreal Road campus - NRC’s boilers and cogeneration gas turbine serve as an alternative fuel for back-up when community needs are greater, and results in overall cost savings; 4) use of benign/environmentally friendly cleaning products as specified within contracts for janitorial services; 5) contracts for grounds maintenance
that specify no use of pesticides; 6) continued incorporation of vehicles in fleet that use alternative fuels such as 5-10% ethanol, and biodiesel, as well as hybrid vehicles; 7) continued investigation, and implementation of energy reduction systems and equipment that reduce energy consumption as well as impact on the environment. Objectives for 2008/09 are as follows:
